Potassium Dichromate

chemical formula : K2Cr2O7
crystal class : triclinic pinakoidal
growing method : slowly cooling of the aquaeous solution
growing time : app. 10 days
crystal size : up to 3 centimeters

Potassium dichromate is doubtless one of the most beautifull lab growns on the market. However in spite the facts that it so pretty its toxic and cancerogen potential is some draw back. The literature states its only dangerous if dust is inhaled over a long time or larger amounts of the compound are ingested. So far the crystal grower should take care when handling the salt and the solution, the owner of a specimen may be not in such a severe danger of getting harmed.
However potassium dichromate is not a kids toy.
The solubility of potassium dichromate increases strongly with higher temperatures but its solubility at room temperature is only low, so far the evaporation process gives only poor results.
But also the slowly cooling process needs some skill to produce extraordinary specimen like this.
This specimen is currently exhibited at the mineral museum in Pforzheim
